JOEY Shipyards: Golden Hour, Bottled
There are patios, and then there’s the one at JOEY Shipyards — a sprawling waterfront deck in North Vancouver’s Shipyards District where the downtown skyline performs across Burrard Inlet while somebody hands you a cocktail. When the sun drops behind the city, half the North Shore seems to be here, and the other half is trying to get a table.
The Concept
JOEY has spent thirty years perfecting Canadian premium-casual — globally inspired, chef-driven food, a bar program with genuine ambition, service closer to a hotel than a chain — and Shipyards is one of its showpieces: a two-storey, ninety-five-hundred-square-foot flagship dropped onto the Lower Lonsdale waterfront, with an enormous patio that has become the district’s social engine.
What to Order
Patio food done properly: sushi cones with tempura prawn, truffle fries, yam fries, hibachi wings and the cult crispy mashed-potato spring rolls while the drinks flow. Come hungrier and the kitchen delivers — Cajun-blackened chicken, poke bowls, steaks off the grill, mini steak French dips with gruyère and red-wine jus, the JOEY burger. The key lime pie with torched meringue closes the show, and the cocktail list gives the sunset honest competition.
The Space
Two storeys of warm wood, leather and glass aimed squarely at the water, wrapped by that iconic patio — nearly twenty-five hundred square feet of it, with heaters and blankets extending the season deep into the shoulder months. Inside is all open energy and views; outside is simply one of Metro Vancouver’s best places to hold a drink.
Who It’s For
Sunset chasers, after-work groups who ride the SeaBus straight into happy hour, weekend brunchers of the North Shore, and anyone who thinks a great evening starts with a view and ends with dessert. On warm nights it’s the hardest ticket in Lower Lonsdale — deservedly.
Good to Know
Do I need a reservation? On sunny evenings and weekends, absolutely — patio demand outstrips supply fast.
Is the patio usable in cool weather? Yes — heaters and blankets keep it comfortable well beyond summer.
Is there a happy hour? Daily, with deals across cocktails, wine and snacks.
What about vegetarians? Korean cauliflower, bowls and salads make a proper meat-free meal.
Can I just walk in for drinks? The lounge and bar hold space for walk-ins, though prime patio seats go to the patient.
